Sports & Life ~ You Can Take It To The Bank “Moneyball”

This quote by Bob Feller might sum up what the newly released movie Moneyball is about: “Every day is a new opportunity.  You can build on yesterday’s success or put  its failures behind and start again.  That’s the way life is, it’s a new game everyday and that’s the way baseball is”.

In Moneyball Brad Pitt stars as Billy Beane, the General Manager of the Oakland A’s (1998 to present) and his attempt to put together a ball club (while under a ridiculous salary constraint from the Team Owners) based on computer-generated analysis to draft his players.  As I watched it, I thought of underdogs; I sensed it was making the statement that people are valuable even when they don’t appear to be on the surface.

I should say upfront that Sports is in my DNA…I loved this Movie!  I’ve heard the comments that it was boring, too many stats, too slow.  Really?  Perhaps people have gotten used to seeing things blown up, fights or cars crashing?  Maybe.

The scene where Billy attempts to get his new approach across to the Old School Scouts…was hysterical…they scouted new guys for years based on their body type (even how their girlfriends looked~if they had an “ugly” gal pal, it meant the Player had no confidence).  Beane was telling them instead, that he would now be using statistical data supplied by Whiz Kid, Peter Brand to make the choices.

This reminds me of:  “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten”   Anthony Robbins

Billy Beane changed the way baseball is managed and played because he wasn’t afraid to try something new~even when people were saying it couldn’t be done and thought he was crazy.  He said “I’m not in it for the record.  I’m not in it for the ring.  I want it to mean something.”

Aside from the perceived slow start and statistical staging, I believe that Moneyball was quite inspirational. Here is what I gleaned:

Don’t judge a first baseman by his ability to catch.

Build a team not a player.

Sometimes, you’ve got to shake things up to get the results you want.

It’s quite powerful having someone in your corner who really believes in you.

“Since baseball time is measured only in outs, all you have to do to succeed is utterly; keep hitting, keep the rally alive, and you have defeated time, you remain forever young”. Roger Angell

In your own Life ~ Keep the Rally Alive…Keep Hitting.
